Do I have a problem? Is my website up? Something that happens from time to time in the World of websites is them going down. it’s inevitable that as a website owner you will sometimes have to troubleshoot and find out if your website is live on the web or not.
As a web developer I’ve come across this issue many times and have accumulated several tools to help decide whether or not a website is up in live and working properly. In this article I’m going to share some of the tools I use regularly so that you can use them to.
- whatsmydns.net this tool is really cool because it allows you to find out what the A record or the IP address on your domain is. The A record is the most important record for a website becuase it determines where the website is hosted. This is the first place to look if a website is not coming up properly, check to see if the IP matches the IP no the website host. Not only that, you can check what the DNS is. The DNS is the domain name servers which are also important for routing information for the domain (although not as important as the A record). Other records can be checked like the MX records or the mail servers which is really helpful if your email is not working properly.
- isitup.org this is a very simple tool that shows whether a website is live on the web or not and how quick the server response time was. Because it is so quick and easy to use, this is where I go first to check a website is working or not.
- shotsherpa.com The third and final tool is a really neat website called Shot Sherpa. This site is awesome because it picks 8 random cities throughout the World and shows what the website looks like in those eight cities. This gives you a good idea if your website is up throughout the World and if it’s not up what it might look like if it’s down. This site can be a very helpful tool for troubleshooting your website uptime in places that you aren’t in.
So those are my list of tools to use to make sure that your website up and running smoothly. They have been very handy for me in my job of web developer and I’m sure they will help you as well as a website owner. Till next time, thank you for reading!
