There’s a really cool technique that works well to build SEO for a website. It involves finding websites that are similar to the business you have in the same area that are no longer active businesses and purchasing their old website domain.
Websites that have been online before carry SEO value. We can pass the SEO value from these websites that have been online by purchasing the domain and forwarding it to our website.
So how do we find these old websites?
There’s a pretty easy way to go about it and the technique that I use is going to GoDaddy and looking up different variations of domain names. For me, I will try “Web Design and the city name” in multiple different variations.
For your business it will be the main keywords customers would search for and the city that your business is located in.
You can use it for any other type of company as well. Once you find a domain that is available, now we need to go to archive.org and look to see if the domain has been online before.
These tasks can be quite tedious and may take quite a while for you to find a website that’s been online. We’re essentially looking for a needle in a haystack.
Once you find a website that has been online before and is available to register for the regular rate, go ahead and get it . Now you can harvest the SEO juice by forwarding the domain to your business website.
To forward a domain in GoDaddy, click on the domain and go to the DNS and at the very bottom of the DNS page is forwarding.
Click on domain forwarding and put in your domain to your actual website. This is a really cool technique and I’ve found quite a few old companies websites that I’ve been able to forward to my website and get the SEO juice.
I’ve tried going through Facebook pages to try and find old companies there as well but I haven’t had a whole lotta luck that way.
If you find another way to find businesses that have shut down, share it below in the comments. I’d love to learn more techniques about how to go about doing this!
